The days that followed were busy and confusing for a dog. It was good to be home and visited by familiar faces, her mother’s and brother’s especially, but strangers came to visit as well. A detective, along with someone from the French Consulate needed help locating the owner of the pet boutique and the cabin Lena rented. Maggie was able to easily call a few establishments on Commercial Street and track down Denise, who drove in right away. But the most important visit was with an official from the Department of Health who wanted to verify Chile’s current rabies vaccine, and advise an immediate booster and in-home quarantine of the dog. Of course, it was Maggie everyone was really concerned about; after all, she’s the one who’d been swapping spit with Lena.

The World Health Organization reported no known record of human-to-human transmission of the virus, but because of the sexual nature of their relationship rabies prophylaxis was strongly recommended. The very next day Maggie received the first of her shots, then took Chile to the vet for a rabies booster. Chile didn’t mind. Life was good again. She was sleeping well and had both Maggie and her appetite back. As far as she was concerned, Lena’s being gone was a welcome relief.

Authorities determined that Lena Bouchet, an outdoor enthusiast, had unknowingly received an accidental bite from a rabies vector species, most likely a bat, or had come into contact with the saliva of an infected animal. Two types of rabies were explained to Maggie: dumb rabies and fast and furious. Animals with the former type staggered around in a stupor, oblivious to people or predators they would normally fear. With the latter form of the virus—the classic mad dog syndrome—aggression and bizarre behavioral changes, along with fever and headaches were common, as they had been in Lena. Authorities agreed it was an unfortunate and horrific death for such a young and beautiful woman, but the test results were in. Case closed.

Only Chile would ever know the truth. It wasn’t the virus that had caused Lena’s behavior; it was her freakish behavior, her primal food preferences that had put her at high risk for exposure. It had always seemed to Chile that Lena was trapped in the wrong body. And if Chile had been able to speak and give an interview, the truth would have shocked everyone, Maggie most of all. Forget all the media attention transgender people were getting these days—Chile’s story would have made sensational headlines: Rabid, Trans-species Lesbian Attacks, Tries to Eat Lover’s Dog. That was the truth. That was the real story. On the Internet it would have gone viral, pardon the pun.

Soon the phone and the doorbell stopped ringing, and Maggie and Chile were able to spend a few days quietly recovering before the fall semester started and Maggie returned to teaching. Their solitude was interrupted only by welcomed visits from Dr. Blanche, Professor Cole and the dogs. They stopped by the first night
